Comparison
Databricks vs Snowflake for healthcare and life sciences
How healthcare providers, payers and life sciences companies should choose between Databricks and Snowflake: HIPAA and PHI, clinical and claims data, genomics and imaging, AI, data sharing and cost.

Healthcare and life sciences organizations face the same platform question as everyone else, with extra weight on protected health information (PHI), regulatory scrutiny and some unusually difficult data: clinical notes, claims, imaging and genomics. Both Databricks and Snowflake are used widely in the sector. Here is how to decide.
The short answer
- Snowflake fits payers, providers and health-tech companies whose work is mostly structured clinical, claims and operational data, analysed in SQL and shared with partners.
- Databricks fits research-heavy organizations (life sciences, genomics, imaging, clinical NLP) and teams building their own machine learning and AI on large, varied data.
- Many large organizations use both: Databricks for research and AI, Snowflake for reporting and data sharing.
How they compare for healthcare
| Databricks | Snowflake | |
|---|---|---|
| PHI and HIPAA | Supported with a BAA and the compliance security profile | Supported with a BAA on Business Critical edition or higher |
| Structured clinical and claims data | Strong | Very strong, SQL-first |
| Clinical notes and documents | Strong (Spark, Python, LLM tooling) | Good (Snowpark, Cortex AI functions) |
| Genomics and imaging | Very strong | Possible, less common |
| Machine learning and GenAI | Very strong, end to end | Growing, strong for LLM functions on governed data |
| Data sharing | Delta Sharing (open protocol) | Secure data sharing and Marketplace |
| Governance | Unity Catalog: row filters, column masks, lineage, audit | Horizon: masking and row access policies, lineage, audit |
What to check before deciding
- The PHI configuration you need, the edition or security profile it requires, and what that does to price.
- Your heaviest workloads. Run a proof of concept on one claims workload and one research or document workload.
- Partner ecosystem. Which platform your data providers, payers or research partners already share on.
- De-identification and access control. How you will mask PHI for analysts and researchers on each platform.
- Team skills. SQL-first analytics teams versus Python-first research and data science teams.
What published results show
Our healthcare and life sciences benchmark analyses published outcomes from both platforms. Both report substantial cost reductions and speed-ups; the platform matters less than how the program is run.
The short version
Structured clinical and claims analytics with heavy partner sharing points to Snowflake; research, genomics, imaging and in-house AI point to Databricks; large organizations often run both. Confirm the PHI configuration and its cost on each before you decide.
